Study levels

How UK study is structured

The levels of UK study, and the difference between the college that teaches you and the university that awards the degree.

Foundation & pathway routes

IY0, IY1 and Stage One/Two routes into a UK degree.

Undergraduate (Bachelor's)

Three years, or four in Scotland. Placement year optional.

Postgraduate taught (Master's)

MSc, MA and MBA — most take one year full time.

Postgraduate research (PhD)

Three to four years of supervised research, usually after a Master's.

A pathway college or study centre is not the university itself. Each profile on this site states who delivers the programme and which university awards the final degree.

Admissions

Application, offer, CAS and visa

The order is the same for almost every institution. YAP's role starts at step one — an enquiry is not an application.

  1. 01

    Choose institutions and courses

Shortlist options that match your grades, English level, budget and intake.

  2. 02

    Application

Your application goes to the institution with transcripts, English evidence and a personal statement.

  3. 03

    Offer

The institution issues a conditional or unconditional offer. Conditions might include grades or an English test.

  4. 04

    Deposit & CAS

After meeting the conditions and paying any deposit, the university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).

  5. 05

    Student visa

You apply for the UK Student visa using your CAS, showing the required funds and English level.

  6. 06

    Travel & enrolment

Arrange accommodation, travel before your course start date and enrol at the university.

Costs

Tuition and living costs

Two different sums, and only one of them is set by the university. Tuition comes from the routes listed here; the living-costs figure the visa asks you to show is set by the Home Office.

Published first-year tuition

about£11,250 – £21,000

Per academic year in pounds sterling, across the routes currently listed on YAP. The figure varies by institution and route, and is before or after any scholarship.

Living costs for the visa

A set amount per month, for up to nine months

Separate from tuition, and higher in London than elsewhere. The Home Office sets the rate and revises it, so check the current figure rather than a copy of it.

English & intakes

English tests and start dates

English tests

Most institutions accept IELTS (UKVI or Academic), PTE and often Duolingo or Oxford tests. Pathway routes commonly ask for around IELTS 5.5; direct degrees around 6.0–6.5. Some institutions accept a waiver based on your Grade 12 English grade or a medium-of-instruction letter.

Intakes and start dates

The main UK intake is September, with January as the second. Some institutions add February, March, May or November starts.
