Founded in 1962 through the merger of Bromley School of Art, Sidcup School of Art, and Beckenham School of Art, Ravensbourne initially provided higher-level courses in art and design. Over time, the institution evolved and moved locations from Bromley Common to Chislehurst, before establishing its current campus on the Greenwich Peninsula in 2010. The university was named after the River Ravensbourne, which flows from Bromley Common to Greenwich.

In recognition of its contributions to education and its evolving role in higher learning, Ravensbourne was granted university status in 2018.
